The Institute of Diabetes Research IDF is dedicated to studying the natural history of type 1 diabetes, identifying mechanisms and predictive markers of the disease, investigating the pathology of the human pancreas, and implementing novel treatment approaches in clinical trials to prevent type 1 diabetes.
These partners have come together with a shared mission: to identify T1D at its pre-clinical stage in children in the general population. The project is funded through the Horizon Europe program and is set to run over five years. European pre-T1D Registry is a network of investigators who register children and adults diagnosed with early-stage type 1 diabetes to inform about monitoring, trials, and treatment to delay or prevent disease progression. The campaign aims to raise awareness for type 1 diabetes, early detection and prevention of type 1 diabetes.
The clinical onset of type 1 diabetes is preceded by presymptomatic stages, that are marked by the presence of two or more islet autoantibodies. Stage 1 is characterized by normal blood glucose levels, while stage 2 is marked by dysglycemia.
Almost nine million people are living with type 1 diabetes worldwide. Although this disease can be a life-threatening, it often goes unnoticed and is diagnosed too late. Yet type 1 diabetes can be diagnosed early, long before symptoms appear, by aโฆ. A new evaluation of data from children with early-stage type 1 diabetes during the COVID pandemic shows an accelerated progression from the presymptomatic early stage to clinical onset of type 1 diabetes in children with a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Islet autoimmunity, which underlies the development of type 1 diabetes T1D , is influenced by various environmental factors, including early childhood viral infections. The diagnosis of type 1 diabetes often comes with serious complications for families, as the autoimmune disease is frequently detected only after severe symptoms develop.
