Monica Mares, 36, and her year-old son, Caleb Peterson, are set to face trial on charges of incest for being involved in a sexual relationship with one another. Mares and Peterson's story went international after they came forward with their relationship.
Mares gave birth to Peterson when she was 16 years old and placed him for adoption. The two were reunited for the first time last Christmas, having reconnected through Facebook and meeting at Peterson's adoptive father's home in Texas. When they returned to New Mexico, a romantic relationship began. Now, the pair says they are willing to face jail time over their relationship.
Mares and Peterson were charged with incest earlier this year after police discovered their relationship in late February.
Mares has had two trial dates that were postponed. One was set in August but postponed until the end of October. Peterson's trial is scheduled for the following week, on March 23 and In October, Mares' lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the case , which was denied.
