NPCs like certain types of items, with a minimum rarity. Gifting these items to them will raise your relationship with them relative to the difference between your Fame levels: as a well-known hero, gifting the same item to a nobody NPC will have more effect than gifting a legendary NPC.
Certain traits and items can modify the effect of gifting:. There are named NPCs who are part of factions , which can be seen in the "Affiliation" section of the gifting window. In case they or their faction has any significance, it will also appear in the "Relations" tab in the character menu. Modifying your relationship with those NPCs will also increase or decrease your relationship with that faction, relative to the importance of that NPC within that faction.
