It was a pretty, pretty, pretty good day. How does Chris celebrate his birthday? One fun anectdote: we had our likely final fondue at the Chalet de Gruyeres, a restaurant we selected early in our trip after much internet research and reputably the best fondue in all of Switzerland at least according to a review by Joe from Omaha. We walked in and saw everyone eating fondue so we felt pretty good about our decision.
We sat down, ordered and, in a model of Swiss efficiency, got our fondue within 10 minutes. It was good, but best is highly debatable. It was appropriately cheesy but, like a lot of Swiss food, just lacking pop.
A little acidity to cut some the richness of the cheese was called for. Wow, did that ever make a difference. Joe from Omaha β you ought to try this one. I can assure you that you did not have the best fondue in Switzerland, because we just made it better.
Pour some wine on your Swiss food to liven it up. Tonight we are at the Hotel St. George in Gruyeres. Without naming names, someone went 2 and, despite having the window open, the stench keeps increasing at an exponential rate.
Questionable weather and an excellent restaurant led us to book two nights at Hotel Callier, which was a very fortuitous move on our part. Woke up this morning and it was raining cats and dogs and temperatures were about 15 degrees cooler than the last week. Took a leisurely breakfast for us, very enjoyable as the buffet was up to 4 star hotel expectations with a good mix of hot and cold entrees. Along with the Gruyere meringues that are extremely well regarded in the region.
