Toulon taught attendees how to protect themselves and their loved ones from in-person and email scams; mall parking lot crimes; pickpocketing and the best way to hold one's money and credit cards; keeping car doors locked, even on one's own driveway; handgun safety; the best way for women to carry their handbags; and the "growing issues of mentally ill grifters" seen at train stations, malls and walking the main streets, said Jeffrey Jacomowitz, the director of corporate communications for Centers Health Care.
Toulon, the 67th and current sheriff of Suffolk County, spoke for an hour. He answered questions at the end from the residents. Toulon is the first African-American sheriff in Suffolk history.
