Environmental conditions, or the quality and state of the environment, are an inescapable part of daily life that can impact health. Environmental conditions such as water quality, air quality, and weather often vary among populations and geographic locations.
While many conditions of the environment are naturally occurring, the quality and impacts of the environment are often affected by historical, economic, and sociopolitical factors. Water is an essential part of the environment that is needed for drinking, bathing, and cleaning.
Most people in the United States get their water from public water systems or private wells. Several studies have found that communities with lower incomes and communities of color have a higher risk of exposure to water quality health violations and water contaminants, such as nitrates and arsenic. Air is another vital condition for life and health. However, air pollution is associated with an estimated , to , deaths annually in the United States.
Certain communities are more susceptible to air pollution than others. Urban areas often have more pollution sources, which contributes to worse air quality when compared to rural areas.
