Comedy, memoir, life advice, problem solving: Birmingham comedian and artist Joe Lycett fits all of it into this book. Parsnips, Buttered is an incredibly funny collection of his attempts at bettering the world by writing letters to government officials, tweeting at politicians, and sending emails to end homophobia. Here he compiles the stories of some of his best work. Be it by complaining on the internet or providing life hacks like melting together candy bars to escape your own loneliness.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an uplifting read filled with a lot of British humour and rarely helpful advice. The landscape is breathtaking, living there is difficult. The stories describe the harsh reality of cowpunchers, ranchers, rodeo-drivers, bartenders, and passers-by. The timeline stretches for over a century. Proulx does not sugarcoat; her descriptions are very vivid and help with visualizing the struggles people face every day.
This story especially made me feel as if I was on an emotional rollercoaster, yet it was so captivating that I could not put it down. While aspects of the pieces assembled here may seem unpleasant, the masterful storytelling keeps the reader fascinated and curious. I recommend this book especially to readers interested in the American West, but I do believe that everyone can find a story here that will stay in their head for a while. As they make their way to Texas and experience the perils of women's lives in that era, their individual stories unfold, revealing both misfortune and secrets.
Louisiana, Switch to Benny Silva, a young aspiring teacher at an underserved school in Augustine, Louisiana. She uncovers the story of three young women and the involvement of the famous Gosset family. Recommended by Maike Jolmes. In The Magic Border, Parks offers an intimate glimpse into her creative process. She not only shares the inspirations behind the 12 tracks on her second album My Soft Machine, but also releases 19 original poems accompanied by the photography of Daniyel Lowden.
In these poems she explores themes of identity, sexuality, youth, trauma, healing and mental health. But even on its own her poetry is heart-wrenching, emotional and deeply touching. If you're like me and sometimes struggle with poetry but are eager to understand it better, this collection is perfect for you.
