The Industrial Hotel at Cypress Avenue is home to 29 residents of a county-financed mental health program, as well as a number of other residents. They vandalized my car already on two separate incidents. Teresa and Tino Huerta, owners of La Perla Restaurant, said hotel residents have entered their restaurant to harass customers and engaged in prostitution behind their dumpsters.
County mental health and program staff said they were previously unaware of the problem, but they want to work with residents to improve the situation. Rogers explained that the county contracts with a company called Telecare, which provides hour support to the 29 adults enrolled in the program at the Industrial Hotel. Clinical workers treat the residents daily, and the program goal is help people with mental health and substance abuse issues become independent through employment and education.
The interior of the Industrial Hotel has been renovated to make it safer for residents, said Christine Coppola, deputy director of adult and older adult services for the county. The hotel has hour exterior video surveillance, she said. City council members expressed concern with the location of the program so close to downtown and in the middle of a dense neighborhood. But Mayor Kevin Mullin emphasized that there are now increased police resources in the downtown area due to the new police substation.
Mullin appointed Councilmember Pedro Gonzalez and Councilmember Mark Addiego to a subcommittee to further investigate the problem.
