A "radicalised Muslim" shot dead at Paris' Orly airport sent a chilling text message to family after shooting a police officer in the face. The man, identified by French media as Ziyed Ben Belgacem, told his father moments after the attack on the officer: "I've screwed up, I've shot a policeman".
Less than two hours later he was shot dead after trying to steal an automatic rifle from a female soldier on patrol at the airport south of Paris. Police later detained the man's brother and father, and raided the man's home in Garges-les-Gonesse, a Paris suburb. The news station stated that the detention of the brother and father, who presented themselves to a police station, was "standard procedure" during such an investigation.
French officials revealed the man was on a terror watch list and had been known to police and intelligence services for months. Police sources told Reuters he was a "radicalised Muslim known to intelligence services".
Authorities say the year-old, a French national who was born in the Paris area, killed at the airport was the same man who shot a police officer in the capital's northern outskirts during a traffic stop. She was shot in the face as officers checked the man's identification in Stains, in Paris' northern outskirts, at around 7am, but her injuries were not life-threatening. French Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux told reporters that the man failed to snatch the soldier's automatic assault rifle and was killed at the airport south of Paris.
