He saw the determination of the laws of distribution β that is, of the division of the net product between wages, profits and rents β as the main task of political economy. This also explains why he returned to the question of rent towards the end of the book, devoting two chapters to a critical analysis of what he considered to be erroneous views on the subject: Chapter 24 dealing with Smith and Chapter 32 dealing with Thomas Robert Malthus.
