In addition to providing continuity for children beyond the age of 18 years, our Adult Befriending Service is designed to provide a few hours support each week to individuals aged 18 to 65 years who are either socially isolated or severely restricted by virtue of their disability.
Whilst the Adult Befriending Service is primarily for people with disabilities who live within the city of Portsmouth, referrals may be considered for individuals who meet the eligibility criteria within the wider South East Hampshire region. For 18 — 25 year olds with a moderate to severe learning disabilities, the Adult Befriending Service will help these young people and their parents, carers by providing support and a new structure to their lives.
They can choose the type of activities they wish to do and also buddy up with other service users and their befrienders to do group activities. The NEET service offers support with interview skills, CV writing, job searching, support in college, help to get into training and general confidence building. This service is for adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities, the majority of whom will be in receipt of direct payments when they become 18 after an assessment of their needs, although other sources of funding may be used for suitable individuals.
By having a constant reliable friend in their lives, service users are enabled to enjoy activities that give them a better quality of life whilst improving their confidence and self-esteem.
