She grew up in a conservative family with two younger sisters and was raised in a Baptist household. Sparks attended Warren Central High School, where she was a cheerleader and played in the school band.
After high school, Sparks enrolled at the University of Kentucky, where she studied for two years before transferring to Western Kentucky University.
