View Full Version : bicycle advice. I have finally realized that my doctor was right when he said I was too fat and have decided to buy a bicycle. The technology has changed so much since I last had one, that I have no idea of what is a good brand and which is crap. Would suggest you buy one with "hybrid" tires - a little wider than the usual racing bike style with very thin tires. Do check out some of the specialty bike shops to see what is around, not just a couple of the box stores.
Not sure what brands are "in" now days - Giant used to make a very nice bike but might be a bit pricey. I would say you probably want a bike with a more upright riding position if you're on the heavy side look for upright handle bars and wide seat.
Used bikes are plentiful if you check on Kijiji. Just take it to a bike shop for a tune up and you'll be good to go. You'll also need a helmet, a bell and lights for the front and back red on back, white on front. Water bottle cage would also be a smart option.
If you're going to be biking on the road, make sure you understand the rules of biking with traffic. I've seen too many guys take up biking again that think they know what they're doing only to be riding in a very unsafe way. I just want to make sure you are safe and enjoy riding - that way you will keep on riding which will help you reach your weight loss goal.
Once you get used to biking long distances you can probably upgrade to a better bike as well. Go to some bike shops and test drive some bikes first. Also, check out the staff and service from the bike shop. I have been going to the same place for the past 25 years. Art beat me to it in his message. The type of bike would depend on what you want to use it for.
