But at the heart of it all is the botanic garden, established by the hospital to provide food and medicinal herbs for its patients. One of the keepers of the garden was Peeter van Couwenberghe, a celebrated 16th-century botanist who cultivated exotic plants and is credited with the invention of the orangery.
In the s, the site fell into disrepair, until it was repurposed as a hotel in the s. Now, after a thorough renovation project, it has become Botanic Sanctuary, a luxurious place where life can be enjoyed to the fullest.
