For 40 years, starting in her Belcaro basement and ultimately moving to the packed shop dubbed The Bookies at E. Mississippi Ave. She began selling books out of her basement, and things just grew.
Today the packed store and its warren of shelves hold 80, individual titles. Old Firehouse Books in Fort Collins was also a grant recipient. Lubeck was born and raised in Denver. A graduate of East High School, she majored in pre-professional social work at the University of Michigan. Lubeck and company have seen some changes in Young Adult titles in recent years, notably the inclusion of grittier content addressing contemporary issues, such as abuse, suicide and adolescent sexuality.
She sighs. Hence the weekly reading days at the store, where parents bring toddlers for 30 minutes of storybook time with a staffer. Lubeck and her workers have a reputation for hands-on, personalized service that sometimes manifests itself in quirky ways.
Lubeck cracked a small grin. Lubeck will push books she believes in. Customers are like family, Lubeck says, and the relationship goes both ways.
