It is a close study of the Glasgow West India merchant elite, extended to the impact of Caribbean wealth, acquired through the exploitation of black slaves from Africa, on the development of the Scottish economy in the early years of industrialisation in the late 18th century. In almost all cases, he has uncovered the powerful influence, and complicity in black African slavery, of Scottish expatriate planters and merchants, some of whom returned to Britain and bought landed estates.
He also brings out the experience of many Scottish expatriates in the Caribbean, which was modest success, or disease and an early death. A thoroughly researched and absorbing read, highly recommended. The impact of transatlantic slavery on the Scottish economy and upon Glasgow in particular was arguably more intense and lasted longer than its impact upon any other part of the UK. This book fully documents the case, examining the extent and disposition of repatriated wealth and looking closely at the Scottish diaspora and the activities of Scots in the Caribbean.
