The quickest and easiest way to Swakopmund is probably the B2 β what passes for a motorway in Namibia β but who wants to take nice tar roads when they can wind through mountain passes on gravel roads, having just spent several days cleaning all the dust out of their vehicle, eh? The drive was quite easy really β the early part of the road through the Khomas Hochland region was a bit rubbish, just lots of loose stones etc, but I was in a fairly chilled out mood so was happy to pootle along at 40mph.
On the western side of the pass β nice roads and the occasional granite? The last stretch of road is decent tar β right from the access road to a large uranium mine that the Chinese I believe are developing in the area.
When I got to Swakopmund I tried a couple of backpackers familiar theme developing here! I then noticed my off-side rear tyre was totally flat. One of the overlanding vehicles there belonged to the French couple I met a week or so ago in Sossusvlei, so had a chat with the bloke there for a while before heading off to find a campsite.
They were en route to Walvis Bay just south of Swakop where they were going to load their vehicle into a container and send it home β this was their last day or so in Africa.
