The work an engraved ruby with the effigy of the emperor Augustus and of a lifetime, the exemplary collection covers the long history a ring with a cameo of King Charles V. Glyptic art unfurls across of glyptic production through the 19th century.
Because their mountings often changed and the most famous among them were often copied, engraved gems are especially difficult to date and identify. During every period, they have been objects of fascination.
Romans adoring Greek art, Renaissance artists seeking to revive antique art, travellers during the era of the Grand Tour and neo-classical enthusiasts of the 19th century—all have passionately studied and collected these stones of memory. In spite of the difficulties of travelling and meeting colleagues, I benefited from countless pieces of advice, remarks and precious information in making this study as complete and accurate as possible. It was also necessary to transform this work into a book: I am grateful to Anna Bertaccini and Christophe Ibach, whose collaboration has been a constant pleasure, and to Christine Chabod for her painstaking work on the index.
